E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is the framework Google's Search Quality Raters use to evaluate the quality and reliability of web content. Originally introduced as E-A-T in Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines, the extra 'E' for Experience was added in December 2022 to emphasize first-hand experience as a ranking signal.

Breaking Down E-E-A-T

Each component of E-E-A-T serves a specific evaluation purpose:

  • Experience — Does the creator have first-hand experience with the topic? Have they actually used the product, visited the place, or performed the activity?
  • Expertise — Does the creator have the knowledge or skill required for the topic? This can be formal (degrees, certifications) or informal (demonstrated deep knowledge).
  • Authoritativeness — Is the creator or website recognized as a go-to source in their field? Are they cited by other authoritative sources?
  • Trustworthiness — Is the content accurate, honest, and safe? Does the site have clear policies, contact information, and transparent sourcing?

E-E-A-T and YMYL Topics

E-E-A-T is especially critical for 'Your Money or Your Life' (YMYL) topics — content that could impact a person's health, finances, safety, or well-being. Google holds YMYL content to higher E-E-A-T standards because inaccurate information in these areas can cause real harm.

How to Demonstrate E-E-A-T

Practical ways to improve E-E-A-T include adding author bios with relevant credentials, citing authoritative sources, sharing original research or data, including first-hand examples and case studies, maintaining consistent publication in your niche, and earning backlinks from reputable sites.
